How To Get The Starcraft Master Achievements – Video Guide

So Blizzard just came out with a new custom game called Starcraft Master. This is a series of 30 rounds where you have to micro your way to victory in different situations. It turned out to be a very fun map and even a bit educational.

There are 7 Starcraft Master achievements that you can get, 4 of them are for completing a set number of rounds of Starcraft Master (10, 20, 25, & 30) and 3 of them are specific to 3 different rounds where you have to complete the challenge without losing any units or in a certain amount of time.

There is also a portrait that you can get by completing 25 of the 30 rounds. The portrait is of 3 Banelings and is pretty cool looking. If you want to complete the challenges and get the achievements but are having a bit of trouble completing each one, check out the Starcraft Master achievement guide I just posted over at my Terran site.

It’s a video series explaining each round, the easiest way to beat it, then a demonstration of how it should go. Hope it helps you out!

Zerglings & Infestors – Flexible Zerg vs Zerg Strategy

The Zerg vs Zerg matchup can be a frustrating game to play since there doesn’t seem to be much variation that you can put out, especially at the start. It can be really easy to go Zergling / Baneling at each other on one base until someone gets a big hit and eventually wins the game. The point of this strategy is to help you get past this frustrating beginning point and onto the mid and late game. The primary units in this Zerg vs Zerg strategy will be Zerglings and Infestors. To learn even more about the Zergling & Infestor strategy, check out the pro video on HotKeyIt.com.

Basic Zergling & Infestor Strategy

Zerg InfestorZerglings with Metabolic Boost

The main goal of this build is to take two bases fairly early so you have access to 4 gas geysers. Zerglings with Metabolic Boost are very important, and you’ll get them quickly to defend and harass to buy time for Infestor production. Banelings can be thrown in if the enemy goes for some mass Zergling play, mostly just for defense though. The goal is to get a good amount of Infestors early so they can start stock piling energy for the engagements to come.

Speed Zerglings are used to counter-attack, scout around the map for expansions, and protect your Infestors. Since they are so fast, you can have no fear of moving out and poking at your opponent’s base. They’ll always be able to make it back in time to defend or escape any sticky situations you get them in.

Infestors are used to deal massive damage with Fungal Growth and Infested Terrans. Since most Zerg units clump up quite a bit, Fungal Growth is very effective to do damage and also to hold the units in place for your Zerglings to chew up. A couple good Fungals can completely take out a huge pack of Mutalisks, which makes it very dangerous to go for Mutalisks against you.

Zergling & Infestor Build Order

Start this Zerg vs Zerg strategy off with an Extractor on 14, then a Spawning Pool on 14 (meaning you’ll create 1 Drone between the first 2 buildings). As soon as the Extractor is done, put 3 Drones in it to start stockpiling gas. Then when the Spawning Pool is done, make 4 Zerglings, research Metabolic Boost, and take the 3 Drones out of gas and have them mine minerals.

This beginning build is very safe, because it beats super-aggressive plays like 6, 8, or 10 Pool, and also doesn’t put you behind too much if your opponent goes Hatchery first (expands before anything else).

After you get your 4 Zerglings out, send a Drone down to your natural expansion to take your second base (Around 21 food). Add on 4 more Zerglings, then move out with them and put pressure on the enemy expansion if they’ve taken one. If they don’t have an expansion, try and poke into their base to see what kind of buildings they have. Since you’re playing against another Zerg player, they can’t hide any buildings early on, so if you can scout around the Hatchery you’ll know everything he’s doing.

After you take your expansion, put 3 Drones back into your Extractor and build an Evolution Chamber. Then around 45-50 food, take your remaining 3 Extractors, upgrade to a Lair, and build a “Macro Hatchery” (a Hatchery that’s placed in your base not to mine anything, just create units). You’ll need this third Hatchery to produce enough Zerglings since they are so cheap and use lots of Larvae.  Also make sure you have a Queen for every Hatchery to constantly Inject Larvae.

As soon as your Lair is complete, build an Infestation Pit and research Pathogen Glands [G] as soon as you can. Then start Infestor production. Remember, the faster you get Infestors up, the more energy they’ll have when you need them.

Zergling & Infestor Combat Strategies

When you get into engagements, use Fungal Growth to hold enemy units in place and do damage. Lead attacks with your Zerglings to protect your Infestors. If you need some extra fire power lay down some Infested Terrans to help soak up damage, deal damage, and force your opponent back. Don’t worry about losing Zerglings, focus mainly on keeping your Infestors alive.

This may be kind of intimidating at first, as this strategy can be fairly micro-intensive. The biggest key is expecting not to be perfect and knowing you’ll make mistakes. Every time you engage the enemy and practice using Fungal Growth and Infested Terrans you’ll get better, and you’ll soon find that you can win big engagements that you previously thought were impossible.

How To Learn More About The Zergling & Infestor Zerg vs Zerg Strategy

The Zergling & Infestor combination is a great way to play Zerg vs Zerg matchups. Infestors are so strong that they can give you a big edge in any game, especially if your opponent is too intimidated to use them. To find out more about this build and learn how to react to different builds your opponent uses, go check out the video that I learned it from on HotKeyIt.com.

In that video jEcho examines 3 games where he uses this strategy to win. Each game his opponent does something different and he explains how he responded and why. He also goes into more detail about timings, reactions, and the weaknesses that they Zergling & Infestor strategy has. Devastate Your Opponent’s Economy With Baneling Drops

Zerg is the most mobile race, but if you count Mutalisks out, he doesn't have so many harrasing options. Or not so many that are used on a larger scale; because there is something that you can use to quickly devastate your opponents' mineral line – I'm of course talking about Baneling Drops.

What Do You Need?

The problem with this strategy is that it's quite expensive. You need Lair, Speed and Transport for Overlords and obviously, a few Banelings. It will cost you a lot of gas, so you should do it either in mid/late game or make sure you will do a lot of damage. I think it might be even labeled as an all-in, but that strongly depends on the game situation.

Anyhow, another important thing you should know is that you can unload Overlords (or any other transports for that matter) either by pressing U and clicking on a location; this way, the transports will fly at the location and start unloading. But what's much better and less known is that while Overlords are moving, you can press U and click on individual Overlords; they will start droping units which won't be stacked and thus they won't die to a single Tank blast.

Tactical Overlay

If you decide to go for this strategy, it's probably best to load more Overlords at once, say 1 per enemy mining line. Albeit it's little difficult to unload everything at once, it's also the way that ought to do enough damage. Even if your opponent is camped e.g. with Turrets, you can simply take more Overlords along and send ahead a few empty ones.

You can make this even more interesting. Banelings with +2 attack will destroy unupgraded enemy workers on one shot, or, and that's possibly even better, you can include one Infestor. Unload the Infestor, quickly use two Fungals and then unload the Banelings; pretty much nothing your opponent can do.

Baneling Drops can be also pivotal in general combat situations. Enemy units tend to travel in clouds due to smart AI and you can utilize this by loading your Overlords with these deadly bombs and then rain havoc upon your opponent's units. It's especially useful against the Protoss deathball (stacked Stalkers), groups of Terran bio army. To be honest, I don't really see any use for this in ZvZ, simply because before you even get the necessary tech, you will get "roflstomped".

Conclusion

Last but not the least, you can think a little ahead. Imagine you know where will your opponent expand next, like a natural 3rd. There's nothing easier than burrowing a few (say 3) Banelings at the mineral line of the supposed expansion. When the new workers arrive… you get the picture.

I'm certain there are many more ways how to utilize the deadly Baneling + Overlord combination and I'll leave it up to you to figure out the rest; you should have enough inspiration for now.

Starcraft 2 Zerg vs Zerg Strategy Guide – Win The Mirror Match

If you've played any number of Zerg vs Zerg matchups, then you probably know that they can get pretty mundane and boring. If you don't use a different strategy, a lot of games will end up being a micro fight of Zergling/Baneling against each other until 1 player gets a lucky Baneling hit and kills a ton of Zerglings. In an attempt to avoid this uneventful playstyle, let's look at some other Zerg vs Zerg strategies that will make this mirror match a little more exciting.

10 Pool Fast Banelings

First I want to look at a strategy that is a slight variation to the usual Zergling/Baneling strategy. Once you get 10 Drones, save up your minerals and build a Spawning Pool, build another Drone and put an Extractor on your Gas geyser. Now make an Overlord and one more Drone.

Once your Extractor is done, put 2 Drones in it to get your gas count up, and build a Baneling Nest once you have 50 gas. When your Spawning Pool is done, you should have 3 Larvae ready so make 6 Zerglings and run them into your opponents base. They will probably have some defenses up, so run away and out of sight.

Morph 5-6 Zerglings into Banelings right when your Baneling Nest finishes and move your Banelings into his mineral line. It's best to split them up so he can't just run away in one direction with his Drones. Get in there and kill as many workers as you can with your Banelings, then transition into a normal build, get a Queen and start teching. This should put you at a pretty good worker advantage going into midgame.

Quick Roaches Into Mutalisks

Since most Zerg vs Zerg strategies involve going Zergling/Baneling, to circumvent this you can get some quick Roaches. There will be a small window where you are fairly vulnerable, but as long as you stay alive during that time you'll be able to defend any amount of Zerglings & Banelings easily.

This build will be pretty close the the standard Starcraft 2 Zerg build order, but with a couple differences. Get a Spawning Pool at 14 then an Extractor at 13. Make some Zerglings for defense and as soon as you have enough gas put down a Roach Warren. When it's done, get 4 Roaches up and head to your ramp. If your opponent has Zerglings inside your base already, it's best to chase them down and try to kill them. But if he doesn't, you're pretty good to go.

Since Roaches are armored units and they have so much life, you can use them to block your ramp very effectively. It takes a whopping 8 Banelings to kill a Roach, but they do splash damage so be careful not to keep them too close. Have your Roaches hold position on your ramp spaced apart to keep them alive as long as possible.

As you can, increase your Roach count a bit and upgrade to a Lair and a Spire. You'll be able to get Mutalisks out pretty quick which will decimate his army and allow you to expand, move forward with your Roaches and take the game.

Mass Queens & Roaches

This Zerg vs Zerg strategy is very flexible, and will allow you to use it in a variety of ways. You need to scout your opponent early, if he goes for a fast expand, then you should do the same. But if your opponent is not expanding and just playing off one base, he's likely going to rush you with Zerglings & Banelings to end the game early.

Start off like any other build, getting your Spawning Pool and extractor up. As soon as your Spawning Pool gets finished, make a Queen and put down a Roach Warren. The first Queen that comes out will be used to Spawn Larva on your main Hatchery and defend against any early Zergling pressure.

Right about the same time your first round of Larva pops off the Hatchery your Roach Warren will get done. Make 4 Roaches and move them out to your ramp immediately to block any Zerglings or Banelings that try to get into your base. Keep making Queens at your Hatchery.

Use your second Queen to start spreading creep across the map. You're going to want at least 3 creep tumors working to spread creep, the more you have the faster it spreads. Your Queens are going to be used for offensive purposes, so you need creep everywhere to give them movement speed.

As your creep expands across the map, march your Roach & Queen army out with it to protect the creep tumors. When you get confronted, use your Queen's to Transfuse your Roaches and Queens to keep them alive for as long as possible. The more Queens you have the more Transfusions you'll be able to cast.

Starcraft 2 Zerg vs Zerg Strategy Action Plan

If you're wondering what the best way to use these strategies is, here's a plan for you. Pick whichever strategy you like the best out of these ones. If you're really aggressive, go with the 10 Pool Fast Banelings, if you're more of a passive player, pick the Roach build.

Then practice it exclusively whenever you're in the Zerg vs Zerg matchup. You'll begin to learn what it's strong against, what it's weaker against, and how to tweak it to fit your playstyle best. Make it your own and you'll have much more success whenever you're against another Zerg player.

Remember too, that even if you have the best Zerg vs Zerg strategy at your disposal, you won't be able to win if you have bad macro. Having better macro than your opponent will allow you to mine more resources and get a bigger army to win the game with shear numbers.

Be sure to sign up and read this Starcraft 2 Macro Guide to learn the 3 simple steps you can take to have a bigger army than your enemy.

Zerg Build Orders – Starcraft 2 Zerg Strategy

In Starcraft 2 the first thing you should know is what kind of strategy you are going to use depending on the matchup you are in. So for a Zerg player, you'll need strategies that will be effective in the Zerg vs Zerg matchup, Zerg vs Protoss matchup, and Zerg vs Terran matchup. These strategies will all likely be different because each race brings a different set of abilities to the table.

After you have you basic strategy figured out, then you need to figure out the best Zerg build order to lead into that strategy. Here are 3 basic strategies that you can use to get your early game timing down next time you play. Pick the one you like best and practice with it until you have it memorized, then move on to the next build order if you'd like to.

When reading Zerg build orders, you'll see a number at the front, this number is what your supply looks like in the upper right corner. So if a section of the build order looks like this: 9/10 Overlord, then you know that you should build and Overlord when your supply hits 9/10. It's pretty easy!

These Zerg build orders will get you started, but you must figure out where to go from there. It's impossible to put a whole game down on paper since they are so dynamic. Build orders like those below are meant as a guide for the beginning of the game only.

Zerg Build Order #1 – The All-in Zergling Rush

This is an all-in type of strategy that works mostly just in the lower ladder brackets. Your goal is to get 6 Zerglings as soon as possible to run into your opponents base and take him out before he can get an army up. The only problem is that you'll be sacrificing your economy so if your rush fails, you'll be doomed unless you did some serious damage to his base.

The Zergling Rush build order is one of the easiest to implement because it's so simple. It doesn't take a lot of skill to do, which is one of the reasons it doesn't work at the higher levels of play. It can be fun to do once in awhile though to grab a quick win or to harass one of your friends in a 1v1 game.

It works best on very small maps that have a short running distance between bases. It works best against Terran players, but it can also work against Zerg and Protoss depending on the skill of the player. If you're up against Terran your goal is to get into his base before he finishes walling off his ramp. If you do get into his base you'll be able to tear up his economy pretty quickly. Just don't let your Zerglings get surrounded by his workers.

To execute this build, all you have to do is send your 6 Drones to mine minerals and wait until you have 200. Then throw down a Spawning Pool. While the pool is building, make 2 Drones and rally them so they mine minerals when they come out.

Right when the Spawning Pool is complete you should have 3 Larvae ready and 150 minerals. Immediately turn all 3 Larvae into Zerglings and rally them to your opponent's base. As soon as more Larvae come out of your Hatchery turn them into Zerglings too and make sure they're rallied into the opposing base, this way they will reinforce immediately.

Remember, if you don't kill your opponent (or at least cripple him badly) you will lose, so give it your all!

Zerg Build Order #2 – Standard 13 Pool

As the name implies, this is the standard Zerg build order that will set you up with a nice economy and Zerglings early enough to do a little harassing and/or defending. If you follow it closely, by the time your Spawning Pool comes up you should have enough gas to immediately buy the Metabolic Boost upgrade at your Spawning Pool.

This will make your Zerglings extremely fast right off the bat, allowing them to run past your opponents army into his mineral line, or defend against fast units like Reapers and Hellions more effectively. Be sure you put 3 Drones in the Extractor as soon as it is done building.

Here's the build order:

6/10 Drone
7/10 Drone
8/10 Drone
9/10 Overlord
10/10 Drone
11/18 Drone
12/18 Drone
13/18 Extractor
13/18 Spawning Pool
13/18 Queen

After that the choice is up to you. Create some Zerglings so you can defend or harass as you please, then tech up to whatever you want next. This build order gets your first Queen up pretty fast which you should always use to Spawn Larvae on your Hatchery.

Zerg Build Order #3 – Fast Expand

This build order takes advantage of the Zerg's ability to expand quickly due to the Hatchery costing 100 minerals less than it's Protoss or Terran counterparts. If done right you should be able to expand very fast while still being able to defend your base while you get your economy up.

This will put you in the lead as you transition into mid game since you will have had 2 bases for so long compared to your opponents one base. It's a good idea to get 3 Queens up with this build so you can have 2 always infusing your Hatcheries to produce more Larvae, and one can be used to spread Creep between your bases and out onto the battlefield. Queens are also excellent defenders against the air and fairly good against ground.

You'll basically want to make Drones the whole time to get your economy up and get enough minerals to put down your early expansion. This guide also will require you to put your Spawning Pool up before you place your Hatchery, which is a much safer option than putting down a defenseless Hatchery. Keep in mind that Drones are consumed when you make a building.

Here's the build order (minus the Drones):

9/10 Overlord
15/18 Spawning Pool
16/18 Hatchery at natural expansion
15/18 Extractor
15/18 Queen
17/18 Zergling
18/18 Overlord

After you've expanded, be sure to transfer half your workers to your new base (as long as it's not being attacked) to keep your economy high. Then build up your Queen count and scout your opponent again to see what you need to be prepared for.

Final Thoughts

Like I said before, these will get you started in the early game. It is a good idea to practice one at a time and figure out which one you like. I don't recommend relying on the 6 Pool Zergling rush as your main strategy. It can be fun once in awhile, but as you get higher in rank it won't be very effective anymore.

Starcraft 2 is a dynamic game where things change all the time. The one thing that is constant is how you get started, which is why build orders are so important. Starcraft 2 Zerg Strategy – Quick Overview

First of all, welcome to the new site!

I plan on making Starcraft2ZergStrategies.com a hub for all Zerg players who are looking to improve their game and master this difficult race. Zerg is perhaps one of the hardest races to play because of all the management that has to be done to keep up with the other races.

There are a ton of Zerg strategies that I'm excited to share with you over the coming days and weeks. If you're new, come back often as there will probably be new strategies up for you to check out when you visit again.

If you're brand new to Starcraft 2, the Zerg is one of three playable races in the game. They are an alien race that uses "evolution" to create new units and defeat their enemies. They're main structure is a Hatchery where all their units are created. The Hatchery spawns Larvae, which you can morph into the unit that you want them to be.

To create more units, you must use your workers (drones) to morph into buildings, which will give you access to create more units with the Larvae. For example, you will first need to build a Spawning Pool. Once you do, you'll be able to morph the Larvae into Zerglings.

Zerg buildings can only be placed on creep, and all Zerg units on creep get a movement speed boost which makes them extremely fast. You can make Queens in your Hatchery to lay down creep tumors which can help you spread creep all over the map.

The Zerg is an extremely fun race to play, and will keep you busy for countless hours trying to master them. It's a real challenge, but someone's got to do it! Right?
